Kitchen Cabinet Island Makeover with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

We have beautiful kitchen cabinets that are perfectly functional but 20years old. We plan to touch the scratches and scuffs in that always fun place called "Someday". So, meanwhile I decided to "test drive" a big project using Annie Sloan chalk paint!! (It is addicting.)

Below is the first coat done with a foam roller. I don't like the roller so I'm onto plan B.

Here it is after three coats (one extra because I am obsessed.)

Months later.

I used wood filler to smooth out the scrapes, scratches, scuffs, etc. I used too much and was punished with the hardest sanding I've ever done in my life. Lesson learned.

Then I sanded each cabinet. You don't really need to sand with Annie Sloan paint but, just be sure I scuffed up the finish. No turning back now!

And now on to painting!

I used a regular paint brush to make the base coat. Lightly because AS paint is expensive and covers really well.

Then it was all done and it looked Early American. Not Fantasy French cabinet found in a barn and lovingly placed in my kitchen. So I strategically sanded a little.

Husband liked it so I began distressing. (After carefully sanding between each coat with the resulting surface smooth as a baby's butt.) one set of drawers below:

More distressing.

After inhaling buckets of dust we began to seal the cabinets with Annie's clear wax. (Did I mention I've been sick for 3 days.lesson: keep mask on).

Steve took one side and I took another. We put it on with a AS brush and sponge as you need to work the wax into the finis. It was wipe on, wipe off as you don't leave any access wax on the paint. Then Steve buffed everything to a beautiful shine with a soft cloth. The wax hardens pretty quick but it takes a few days to really harden all the way.

(Hands shaky from sanding.)

And now introducing a French farm table we found in a barn!!!!

The end. :)

Table update with Annie Sloan chalk paint

I've been experimenting with Annie Sloan chalk paint and find it odorless and doesn't affect my asthma. (Although the sanding does--face mask a must).

You might remember this table in its earlier life:

Don't ask me why I'm changing it. It's a DYI thing. :)

So...

Now it's white with green squares.

Notice the island cabinet is magically white also!!  More on that coming soon. (I'm sick, laying on the couch so why not post my backlog!!)
